A. Financial Support: First-Year Rotator Students
Stipend:
-
All CMB students are awarded a gross (pre-tax) stipend of $23,000 for the 2008-09 year for a 12-month appointment

In order to receive a mid-September 'mini-paycheck' (for the week of orientation), students must be registered as full-time graduate students (eight or more credits) and have turned in all necessary CMB benefits information to the CMB Office by Friday, August 29
-
Upon registering as a full time student and completing all necessary CMB benefits information, students will receive a $1000 relocation allowance check

In the beginning of October, students will receive a paycheck for the entire month of September
-
Thereafter, students will receive their paychecks at the beginning of every month
Tuition:
-
Tuition is remitted, thus, students should not receive a tuition bill
-
Tuition is paid by the student's main funding source (CMB Program, fellowship, or training grant)

If a student receives a tuition bill, they should contact Marcia Gratz at the CMB Office immediately mgratz@wisc.edu, or (608) 262-8110

If Marcia is not contacted about the bill prior to September 19, 2008, the student will be charged a $100, non-refundable late fee from the University (The CMB Office is not responsible for any late fee)
Segregated Fees:
-
Each semester, students with a Research Assistant title will need to pay segregated fees (Students on training grants or fellowships do not pay for segregated fees)

Segregated fees cover the cost of the University Health Services, bus passes, use of the Wisconsin Unions, etc.

This is a mandatory fee of about $300 to be paid each semester
-
Students will receive a bill for the segregated fee charge or the balance due can be checked on MyUW financial account
-
Fees can be paid at the Bursar's Office: Administration Building, 21 N. Park St., Suite 7101 or online through MyUW
-
For the fall semester, this fee must be paid on or before Friday, September 19, 2008
-
If this fee is paid past the deadline, students will be charged a $100 non-refundable late fee (The CMB Office is not responsible for any late fee)

B. Financial Support: All CMB Students
Research Assistants (Students not supported by a fellowship or training grant):

Stipend:

The CMB Program pays the student’s stipend until the student has confirmed a permanent Thesis Lab
-
Once the student has joined a Thesis Lab, the Thesis Advisor is responsible for the stipend

Segregated Fees:

Student pays segregated fees at the beginning of each semester

Fall 2008 semester is around $300

Fellows (Students with Fellowships: NSF, AOF, or HHMI-Gilliam):

Stipend:

A portion of the stipend is paid from the fellowship

If a fellowship stipend is below the CMB stipend rate, the student's fellowship is supplemented to bring the stipend up to the CMB rate

The CMB Program will pay the remainder of the stipend for the first-year rotating students until they have joined a Thesis Lab

Trainees (Students supported by an on-campus Training Grant such as MBTG, Genetics, Biotechnology):

A portion of the stipend is paid from the training grant

If a training grant stipend is below the CMB stipend rate, the student's training grant is supplemented to bring the stipend up to the CMB rate

The CMB Program will pay the remainder of the stipend for the first-year rotating students until they have joined a Thesis Lab

C. Health Insurance and Health Care

Graduate students, research assistants, fellows, and trainees are eligible for state group health insurance plans offered to Graduate Assistants at UW Madison

Single and family health care coverage is available at minimal cost

D. Health Care, Additional Option

University Health Services (UHS) is located at 1552 University Avenue (Main Clinic) and 115 N. Orchard St. (Counseling and Consultation services)

UHS is free for UW-Madison students
-
Medication, hospitalization, and emergency room care are not included with this service
