All students are required to conduct an annual Progress Report with their Thesis Committee each year after passing the Preliminary Exam. The Progress Report meeting must be scheduled by May 17 and completed by August 31 of the third, fourth, and fifth year. Failure to do so will result in a hold being placed on the student’s registration.

This evaluation provides a mechanism for the student to learn about his/her overall progress towards their degree and to identify areas of strength and weakness in the student’s development as an independent scientist. The Progress Report ensures that the student is making satisfactory research progress toward achievement of the PhD

A. Requirements to Complete

Prior to the Progress Report Meeting:

• Schedule a Progress Report meeting: Inform CMB Office of the scheduled meeting date (Failure to do so will result in a hold being placed on the student's registration)

• Prepare an oral presentation of the research progress

• Obtain and complete the first section of the Progress Report Form, available at the Forms section of the CMB website

• Be sure to indicate the yearly seminar requirement that has been met

• Provide the form to the Thesis Advisor at least one week prior to the scheduled meeting

At the Progress Report Meeting:

• Establish the Chair of the Thesis Committee meeting (see the Thesis Committee section of the handbook for specific details)

• Present an oral report describing the past year’s accomplishments

• The report will be discussed by the student, the Thesis Advisor, and the Thesis Committee

• At least three Thesis Committee members must be present at the meeting and sign the Progress Report Form

• If necessary, the student should meet individually with the rest of the committee to get their input and signatures after the meeting

Following the Progress Report Meeting:

• Deliver the completed Progress Report Form to the CMB Office (Failure to do so will result in a hold being placed on the student's registration)
