A. First-Year Rotator Students
In early July, new students will receive an e-mail from the Registrar's Office inviting them to register. New students will be able to register beginning in mid-July. It is required that First-Year CMB students ONLY register for six credits of research PRIOR to beginning the program. Students will register for courses during Welcome Week, after consulting with their orientation Advisor. Follow the procedure outlined below to register for research credits.
To Register the Student will Need:

An active My UW account: visit www.wisc.edu, click on MY UW, and create a NetID and password

Student ID number (if you need your number, contact the CMB Office cmb@bocklabs.wisc.edu)
To Register for 990 Research Credits:
Follow the process below to register for six research units in Zoology 990, Dr. Bill Bement (CMB Program Chair)

Visit: www.wisc.edu, click on MY UW
-
Log in to the MY UW website, using the UW NetID and password

Click on the "Student Center" (a new window will pop up)

Click on "Add a class" under the Enrollment heading
-
Select term 1102: Fall 2009-2010
-
In the blank square that states "Enter Class Nbr," fill in #78601
-
In the area that states "Units," select 6 from the pull-down menu, then click "Next"
-
A screen will come up verifying the class selection. Make sure the selection is correct, and click "Next"
-
Click "Next" again
-
On the following screen select "Proceed to Step 2 of 3"
-
Select "Finish Enrolling"
-
The class schedule can now be viewed
To Register for Courses:
On the first day of Advising & Orientation, students will be introduced to their corresponding Orientation Advisor. It is the student's responsibility to schedule an appointment to meet with their advisor during Welcome Week. Students will register for courses (other than 990 research credits) AFTER meeting with their Orientation Advisor. If you encounter problems while registering for a class, such as a message that indicates that the class or a section is full, please contact the CMB office immediately.

Determine coursework: See the Course Requirements and Course Descriptions sections of the CMB Handbook. Note all courses that you are interested in taking.

Visit www.wisc.edu, click on My UW

Log in to the My UW website, using the UW NetID and password

Click on the "Student Center" (A new window will pop up)

Click on "Class search/wish list" under "Academics" section
-
Select term 1102: Fall 2009-2010
-
Under the heading, "Course subject," choose the department (i.e., Biochem or Micro) of the course of interest
-
Under the heading "Course Number," type in the course number of the course of interest
-
Click on search, the course of interest should appear
-
Click on the "View Sections" box on the course of interest page
-
Browse through the different sections of your course and decide which one is best for you
-
Select your course by clicking the "Select Class" opiton and then follow the prompts
-
See section above titled, "To Register for Research Credits," to obtain registration details

During fall and spring semesters, students add/delete 990 research credits to bring the total number of credits to 12
-
Students must be registered by Friday, August 28 to receive a paycheck in mid-September for the last week of August
-
If students are not registered by August 28 they will not receive a paycheck until the beginning of October
B. Continuing Students
Students will be sent an invitation to enroll via e-mail from the Registrar's Office during the school year. All non-dissertator students must register for 8-12 credits each fall & spring semester. During the 8-week general summer session, non-dissertator students register for two credits. All dissertator students are required to enroll for three credits each fall, spring, and summer semester.

To register for research credits:

Students register for 990 research credits with their Thesis Advisor's home department
If all coursework has not yet been completed:

Consult with Thesis Advisor and additional Thesis Committee members to determine appropriate coursework

During fall and spring semesters, register for graduate courses and then add 990 research credits to bring the total number of credits to a minimum of eight credits
If all coursework has been completed, but dissertator status has not yet been obtained:

Register for research credits (minimum of eight) with the Thesis Advisor's home department

Contact the department administrator of Thesis Advisor to become authorized to register for these credits
C. Dissertator Status

To reach dissertator status according to the Graduate School, the following requirements must be met:

All CMB Course Requirements completed (11 credits from CMB course list)

The Preliminary Exam passed and the warrant returned to the Graduate School

Graduate School requirements state that students are required to maintain continuous enrollment until the completion of the doctoral degree
-
Dissertators are required to enroll for three graduate credits directly related to their dissertation research in each fall, spring and summer semester until graduation (audits do not satisfy this requirement)

Enrollment is required for the eight-week summer session if the student holds a Reseach Assistantship (RA), Traineeship, or Fellowship.

Audits and pass/fail do not satisfy dissertator status requirements

Additional courses taken as a dissertator will result in the removal of dissertator fee status
D. Auditing Courses
-
Courses may be audited, thus students may register as an auditor
-
If there is limited space in the class, fully registered students will be accepted into the class before a student is eligible to audit the class
-
The student must be authorized by both the professor and the department in which the course is taught
-
The student will then be eligible to register online as usual
-
In order for the course to be audited, not graded: fill out the Course Change Form and enter AU (audit) in the 5th column
-
The instructor and the student must sign the Course Change Form, and turn this into the Graduate School Office, 228 Bascom

An audited class will appear on the transcript, but will not count toward the minimum credit requirement
