XI. Seminar Requirements

The goal of the seminar requirement is to give each student training and experience in oral presentations. Students are required to give an oral presentation beginning the 2nd year of the program and each year there after. 2nd and 3rd year students give either a Journal Club Presentation or Formal Research Seminar, while 4th, 5th, and 6th year students must give a Formal Research Seminar. This requirement can be satisfied through a number of seminar series that are recognized by the CMB Program and by individual CMB Focus Groups. Students should consult with their Thesis Advisor as to the appropriate seminar.

A. Journal Club Presentation (2nd & 3rd year)

  • Students should discuss Journal Club options with their Thesis Advisor

  • If the student is unable to find an appropriate Journal Club, the student should see the chair of the focus group within the student’s area of interest

  • It is expected the student will attend the Journal Club on a regular basis

  • The presentation must be a 30-minute campus talk

  • At least three CMB faculty members must be present at the talk and sign the Seminar Requirement Form available on the Forms page of the CMB website

  • Turn in Seminar Requirement Form to the CMB Office by August 31 (Failure to do so will result in a hold being placed on the student's registration)

B. Formal Research Seminar (4th, 5th, 6th year)

  • Provides a training component in which student presenters are provided critical feedback on their seminar presentation

  • Must be a 10-minute national talk or 30-minute campus talk

  • The campus talk:

    • Must be a 30-minute power point presentation

    • At least three CMB faculty members must be present at the seminar and sign the Seminar Requirement form available on the Forms page of the CMB website

  • A joint lab meeting may count as a Formal Research Seminar if it meets the campus talk requirements

  • Turn in Seminar Requirement Form to the CMB Office by August 31 (Failure to do so will result in a hold being placed on the student's registration)
