This orientation will include information on the upcoming benchmarks for your 2nd year in CMB, tips and timelines to prepare for your Prelim, discussion about the expectations of the written proposal and oral defense, and also a Q&A panel of CMB students who have passed their Prelim in recent years. CMB Chair, Bill Bement, along with CMB faculty trainers Kurt Amann & Anne Griep, will share their expertise with you and hopefully ease some of your anxiety about the upcoming Prelim Exam.

Vilas Travel Fellowships for UW-Madison Dissertators and Final-Year MFA
students. In 2006, more than 200 awards of $600 were granted for
domestic or international research or conference travel and five awards
of $1,500 were granted for international research or conference travel.
The CMB Retreat will be held at Devil's Head Resort. This is a chance for CMB students to get to know each other and learn about the wide variety of research going on in the program. Students give seminar presentations and there is a poster session. Registration details will be sent to all CMB students in early October. The retreat organizer is Adam Hume, please contact him if there are any questions.
The CMB Program will host a resource fair featuring a variety of organizations, offices, and resources on campus. Grad Student Collaborative, Multicultural Grad Network, Recreational Sports, UW Libraries, Wisconsin Union, Visitors Information Program, Employee Assistance Office, and CMB committees and organizations.
Roundtable discussion where new incoming students can ask questions of the returning student panel. What to expect during rotations, choosing first semester classes, life in Madison, etc.
